Cruising in the Baltic

So we had our first cruise last month... :-)

And we really enjoyed it. We started in Copenhagen and cruised through the Baltic Sea ending in Helsinki, visiting Germany, Poland, Sweden, Latvia and Estonia.

The itinerary was a bit curtailed. A problem with the ship meant that we were not able to visit Oslo (though we have both been there before) and rough weather in the middle of the trip meant we were unable to dock in Klaipeda, in Lithuania. I'd been there before on a previous trip to the region as a guided tour but Gerard hadn't.

Gdansk for me was one of the highlights of the trip. Our ship docked in Gdynia, not far from the city, so we took a taxi to and from Gdansk. I had no great expectations of it, but it was a really beautiful place and one that I would be very happy to visit again.

Another highlight was the town of Wismar, in northern Germany, which we visited while we were docked in Warnemuende. Interestingly it was where the German film director, F. W. Murnau, filmed some of the scenes from his silent movie Nosferatu. And there was a plaque on the ground in the main square celebrating that.
